Woven Heritage Baskets

Woven Heritage Baskets is a small Ghana-based business that specializes in providing meticulously handcrafted Bolga baskets woven by talented artisan weavers of Bolgatanga, Ghana. Our baskets are handwoven from natural elephant grass, reflecting their sustainability and eco-friendliness.

Our brand was founded by Jennifer in 2020 following her initial visit to the Bolga community. She was deeply inspired by the exceptional craftsmanship of Bolga artisans and recognized the global potential of their sustainable craft. Our business empowers the rural artisans of Bolgatanga while championing sustainability. We support local talents, promote sustainability, and provide a means of livelihood for artisans. With us, you’re not just buying a product but joining a movement that changes lives and protects our environment.

Our direct partnership with the weavers is more than just a business arrangement. It’s a commitment to ensuring that our customers consistently receive the highest quality products. We meticulously oversee the production process from start to finish, guaranteeing excellence at every step.

At the heart of Woven Heritage Baskets is the belief that artisans should be paid fairly for their craft. Bolga Baskets

Bolga baskets represent the meticulous craftsmanship of skilled artisans from the suburbs of Bolgatanga, Ghana, known as the Frafra people. The art of basket weaving in Bolgatanga has a rich and storied history that spans generations. The tradition dates back centuries, with its roots deeply intertwined with the culture and livelihood of the communities.

Bolga baskets are exclusively handwoven by the skilled Frafra artisans of Bolgatanga, primarily women, from Elephant grass (veta vera grass). Elephant grass is a natural, robust grass indigenous to the region and known for its strength and flexibility.

Bolga baskets are eco-friendly as they are made from renewable natural materials. The use of organic dyes on the colorful baskets further enhances their sustainability. Additionally, their durability means they can be used for many years, reducing the need for disposable alternatives. Bolga baskets typically last up to three decades.

The craft has evolved over time, transitioning from purely functional items to exquisitely designed baskets that serve both practical and aesthetic purposes.

The production of Bolga baskets provides a vital source of income for many artisans, especially in the rural areas of Bolgatanga. This craft has a significant economic impact on the region, supporting the livelihoods of numerous families.

Supporting local artisans

Since our commencement in 2021, we have generated over 100,000 Ghanaian cedis revenue annually (approximately $9,000) for the artisans of the suburbs of Bolgatanga, Ghana. Providing a means of livelihood for these artisans is a core mission for Woven Heritage Baskets.

The Bolga community is one that has faced prolonged neglect in terms of basic social amenities from successive governments. We take immense pride in supporting this community by providing dependable income for its artisans.

The minimum wage in Ghana is currently a mere 14.88 Ghanaian cedis ($1.20) per day. On average, each weaver supports four dependents, so all other dependents are touched when we partner with a weaver. Our business provides a sustainable income stream for local artisans, making their success our success.

Our commitment is unwavering, and by patnering with us, you also support a local community and promote a sustainable environment.
