Our Story

Woven Heritage Baskets is a small business in Ghana that specializes in providing beautifully handcrafted Bolga baskets woven by skilled artisans in Bolgatanga. Each basket is unique by hand, showcasing the intricate patterns and vibrant colors that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Bolgatanga.

Founded in 2020 by Jennifer, Woven Heritage Baskets was inspired by a visit to the Bolga community, where the exceptional craftsmanship of Bolga artisans and their use of sustainable materials sparked a desire to collaborate with them.

We love teaming up with our artisan partners to create truly unique pieces. Each basket reflects the artisan’s journey and craft, allowing us to see art through their eyes. By working closely with the weavers, we ensure that every basket meets our high standards for quality and authenticity, capturing the true essence of their work. This collaboration allows us to offer our customers not just a product but a genuine piece of the artisan’s story.

We follow fair trade principles because we believe in treating artisans right. Our artisan partners set their own prices, which means they’re paid fairly for their work. This way, every purchase supports ethical practices and helps empower the local artisans.

Our Baskets

Bolga baskets represent the exceptional craftsmanship of the Frafra people from Bolgatanga, Ghana. This tradition, passed down through generations, is a vital part of the region’s culture and history.

Handwoven exclusively by skilled Frafra artisans, primarily women, these baskets are woven from Elephant grass—a natural, resilient grass known for its strength and flexibility. The dyes used in making the colorful baskets are plant-based traditional dyes.

Each basket is one-of-a-kind, reflecting the personal touch of the artisan who made it.

Built to last up to thirty years, Bolga baskets are also a sustainable choice, reducing the need for disposable alternatives. Their design beautifully merges function with art, making them both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

The creation of Bolga baskets provides essential income to the local artisans of Bolgatanga, giving them support and recognition for their exceptional craft.

Sustainability

We are committed to eco-friendly practices. Each basket is handcrafted from natural Elephant grass, a sustainable material known for its strength and flexibility. Our use of organic dyes further enhances their environmental benefits.

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond materials. By working directly with artisans in Bolgatanga, we ensure fair trade practices and high-quality craftsmanship while supporting a local community. With a lifespan of up to thirty years, our baskets reduce the need for disposable alternatives, making them a lasting and responsible choice.

Supporting Artisans

Since 2021, Woven Heritage Baskets has proudly contributed over 100,000 Ghanaian cedis annually (about $9,000) to the artisans in Bolgatanga, Ghana. Providing a means of livelihood for these artisans is central to our mission.

The Bolga community has faced challenges with inadequate basic services, and we’re honored to provide dependable income to its artisans. With Ghana’s minimum wage at only 14.88 cedis ($1.20) per day, each weaver’s earnings help support their family members, making a significant impact.

By partnering with us, you also support talented local artisans, helping them sustain their traditional crafts, improve their livelihoods, and strengthen their community.
